Zeitgeist –  the general intellectual, moral, and cultural climate of an era

The term zeitgeist comes from the German words “zeit”, meaning time, and “geist”, which is basically spirit. Essentially, it is the spirit of the time. For those of you who have seen Deadpool 2 (no spoilers), you’ll get a kick out of the term. Many artists and thinkers have been credited with tapping into the zeitgeist of the world they lived in.

If you want to get a sense of today’s zeitgeist, all you have to do is see what’s trending on Twitter. Ok, that may be a bit much of a statement, but on a micro level, it can be a good exercise to gain a little #WednesdayWisdom. Yes, #WednesdayWisdom is a spiritual sibling to #MondayMotivation, #ThursdayThoughts, and #FridayFeeling. What about Tuesday? Well, Tuesday is just plain awful. It’s not a fun social day like Thursday, or a day of joy like Friday. It’s not the midway point like Wednesday. It isn't even difficult enough to muster the enthusiasm to fight to feel better like Monday. Tuesday is just…filler.

Looking through hashtags is a great way to hop in on a fun trend, like #ChangeAWordSpoilABook or something of that nature. It’s a great way to see what’s happening in the world and what people are talking/thinking about. More than anything, it’s a great way to find inspiration for projects. If it’s a business project, find out what your customers are thinking. If it’s a creative project, use the current goings on as inspiration. Maybe something as silly as #NationalTurtleDay can inspire you to write a story, or paint a painting.

For either scenario, hashtags can be a great inspiration for t-shirt creators. T-shirts can tap into the popular funny bone the way memes do, and a lot of having a successful comedy tee is determining why and how some memes get as popular as they do. Distilling them down to a root message may allow you to tap into the zeitgeist to a degree. If you’re in business, you need to know your target customer. You also need to know what that customer is thinking and how they operate. Use the free market research at your fingertips!
